About Doc
Since I was a kid, I always knew I wanted to be a doctor. When I started getting into natural beauty products and realizing that the ingredients of what we consume and put on our bodies make a huge difference, I wanted to become a holistic MD. I did not realize at the time that is a bit of a contradiction!
In 6th grade, I had a boy in my gym class fall on me and sprain both of my knees. I never got any real treatment (I was just thrown into braces), so by the time I was in high school, I had low back pain so bad that I could not stand in the lunch line for more than 15 minutes.
My mom had seen a chiropractor for migraines when she was younger, so she took me to my first chiropractor - and it changed my life. I had been experiencing sacroiliac joint pain for years; any time I stood for too long, I felt like I was being stabbed in the back with a knife. But after a few visits, it turned into a dull ache, and eventually resolved so that I only had pain if I did something. I also suffered from neck pain and headaches, which got better with the chiropractic too. I thought it was normal to have daily headaches! (And to take Advil every day. At 15!)
This experience inspired me to become a chiropractic doctor. I knew I wanted to help people holistically, not with drugs or surgery.
So I went to undergrad for Biomedical Engineering as my "pre-med." It turns out that it was perfect for giving me the engineering and physics understanding of proper alignment. (It's also one of the reasons I've never understood anti-chiropractic sentiment - if you make a crooked house, you'll have problems; if you have a crooked body, why would you not expect problems?!)
I also got my minor in Japanese language because I'm a huge nerd (and I used to be super into anime). After graduating and doing a 6-week exchange program in Japan, I started my DC at New York Chiropractic College (now Northeast College of Health Sciences).
I chose this school in part because I could also study acupuncture, which I felt would be a great addition to chiropractic. Again, I was lucky that the pairing was perfect - I believe having both modalities has made me a very well-rounded practitioner, and I often see health challenges through a different lens than other doctors. (I especially attract people who have been blown off by traditional medicine - it turns out, most of their health issues are interconnected, but it only makes sense if you take a holistic approach rather than the conventional isolated systems approach.)
During my last semester of school, I discovered ABC (Advanced BioStructural Correction) via my friend Mark. It is a more comprehensive approach to chiropractic, and it helped me personally so much that I adopted it as my primary style. By the time I graduated, I was suffering from neck pain, headaches, and sacroiliac joint pain again, as well as increased knee pain and mid-back pain. After my friend adjusted me a few times with this new style, I was 85% better - and that was after 3 years of free, constant chiropractic care at school!
Once I graduated, I decided to start my own practice doing this style and combine it with acupuncture. Over time, I have changed the protocol to be even more gentle and effective, while also adjusting the hands and wrists - what I call the Pulley Method.
I spent almost 12 years as Pulley Chiropractic & Acupuncture in North Andover, MA. Unfortunately, I had to close that practice due to developing arthritis in my hands (I have subclinical EDS (Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome)) and rising financial pressures.
I reopened as Doc & Hanshi. I am still treating patients, but with limited hours to spare my hands. (They are doing much better with the break and reduced patient load.) If you are local and want to become a patient, please email me at janinepulley@gmail.com.
My goal is to share the information that Steve and I have with more people than just our local patients. Together, we have years of clinical experience with a truly holistic foundation. We combine posture correction, Traditional Chinese Medicine, whole food nutrition, herbs, and restorative exercise to help you help yourself in every aspect of your life.
